Sergei Prokofiev was one of Russia’s outstanding twentieth century
The catalog of his works includes symphonies, works for concert band,
concertos, piano sonatas and compositions for various chamber ensembles. Two of
his best known works for band are Athletic Festival March and March,
The Love for Three Oranges was an opera composed by Prokofiev based on
a play by Carlo Gozzi.
The first performance of this opera, in which a prince is cursed to fall in
love with three magic oranges, was presented by the Chicago Opera in 1921,
conducted by the composer.
The March from The Love for Three Oranges is the best known selection
from the opera and, in this scoring by the composer for symphonic wind
ensemble, is performed frequently by bands around the world.
