In Memoriam

It is with deep sadness that The Concord Band reports that William M. Toland, the Band's Music Director Laureate, passed away on January 25, 2012, after a long decline in health. Mr. Toland was Music Director for 33 years, from 1962 to 1995, and established its missions of providing the best in concert band music to Concord-area audiences, commissioning new works for band, and inviting the best guest conductors, composers, instrumentalists, and singers to perform and work with the Band.

The Concord Band was always near to Bill's heart, as exemplified by his wish that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Band. Bill's warmth, musicianship, and humor touched many people, and his legacy will live on in the standards he set for “his” band and the goals and aims he set in place for the group's growth. The Concord Band would not be the unique and respected ensemble it is today without his influence and guiding spirit.

Services will be private. However, the Band is planning a recognition at its Winter Concert on March 3, and the Fall 2012 concert will be dedicated to a celebration of Bill's life and role with the Band.

Looking for Substitute Players

The Concord Band is looking for musicians who would be willing to be on our “call list” to fill in for absences in rehearsals or performances. If you'd like to play with us or know someone who might, please get in touch with either Jim O’Dell, CBA Director or Dave Tweed, CBA Personnel or leave a message on the band’s answering machine at 978-897-9969.
